Press Release: FOSG proposal for EU specific interconnection objectives by 2030

Jun 19, 2013 -

"No transition without transmission" - Europe's leading grid initiative calls for a clear commitment to a single electricity market to deliver real benefits to Europe's consumers.   The Friends of the Supergrid (FOSG) welcomes the European Council's interest in infrastructure developments and its request for concrete objectives for 2030. It is disappointed by the EC proposals to reduce Europe's dependence from third countries which  mainly focus on gas and the general lack of ambition for electricity infrastructure which if delivered would create real benefit to European consumers through reduced prices, enhanced security of supply and lowered emissions.

If the EU is to achieve its 2030 targets it will need to enable investment in large-scale low carbon generation that in many cases is very distant from centres of consumption. This requires the development of a pan-European grid or "Supergrid” which should be the main objective for 2030.  A European Supergrid will enable:

- The optimisation of existing energy mixes;
- Integration of Europe’s renewable potential;
- Reduction of electricity prices as the market would be fully integrated with a large choice of suppliers and a net reduction in congestion;
- Significant reduction in our energy supply needs from third countries;
- The reduction of CO2 emissions.

FOSG has proposed a number of practical steps that should be included in the 2030 Package to facilitate the development of the above objectives. The paper also provides concrete examples of existing investments in interconnections which clearly demonstrate the social and economic benefits delivered by these projects.
