Tidal Power Giant Makes Debut

Aug 18, 2010 - Daily Record - Glasgow - Energy Central

The most powerful and largest tidal turbine ever built was unveiled yesterday in Scotland.

The AK1000, developed by renewable energy specialists Atlantis Resources, was shown off at Invergordon on the Cromarty Firth.

Measuring 22.5 metres high, the turbine can generate enough electricity for more than 1000 homes.

It weighs 130 tonnes and is designed for harsh weather and rough, open-ocean environments, such as those found off the Scottish coast.

The turbine is to be installed at the European Marine Energy Centre site on the seabed off Orkney, where it will be connected to the grid and tested for three years.

Atlantis boss Timothy Cornelius said: "The AK1000 is capable of unlocking the economic potential of the marine energy industry and will greatly boost Scotland's renewable generation capacity in the years to come."
