EIA: Twelve states responsible for majority of U.S. wind power in 2013

In 2013, 12 states were responsible for 80 percent of U.S. wind power, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s (EIA) Electric Power Monthly report.

Texas was the top wind producing state with approximately 36 million megawatthours (MWh) of electricity. Iowa followed with more than 15 million MWh, followed by California, Oklahoma, Illinois, Kansas, Minnesota, Oregon, Colorado, Washington, North Dakota, and Wyoming.

Combined, the 12 states produced a combined 134 million MWh of wind produced electricity. Overall, 167 million MWh of wind power was generated in the U.S. in 2013, a 19 percent increase from 2012.

In 2013, 23 states increased wind power production by more than 10 percent from 2012. In addition, California’s wind power, for the first time, exceeded its geothermal generation.
