Uruguay’s energy minister Roberto Kreimerman has signed a decree which seeks to install 200MW of solar projects in the country.

The decree — which is in line with the country’s goal to diversify its energy sources — reveals that the PV projects will require a total investment of around US$400 million.

The projects will vary in size with the largest capacity reaching 50MW. Successful bidders will be able to benefit from a 25-year power purchase agreement with Uruguay’s state-owned electricity utility firm.

The government of Uruguay has not yet revealed when a request for proposals will be issued.

In March the government inaugurated the country’s first solar power plant. Owned by Uruguay’s energy regulator Dirección Nacional de Energia (DNE), the 481kWp installation was financed by the Japanese government.
