Boeing’s South Carolina plant to install 2.6MW solar system and become a 100% renewable energy site

Sep 1, 2011 - Syanne Olson - pv-tech.org

Boeing and South Carolina Electric & Gas (SCE&G) will be working together to make Boeing's South Carolina facility a 100% renewable energy site. The North Charleston site will produce renewable energy with the help of a 2.6MW rooftop solar installation. Both companies maintain that the solar system at the Boeings 787 Final Assembly site will be the largest solar installation in the Southeast and the sixth largest in the US.

Jim Albaugh, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes commented, “Our 787 Dreamliner is manufactured using fewer hazardous materials and designed to consume less fuel, and produce fewer emissions. It only makes sense that our business operations in South Carolina reflect the environmental progressiveness of the airplane we'll build here."

SCE&G will own, install and maintain the solar power system with all power produced from the system directed to the Boeing facility. Furthermore, SCE&G has agreed to complement the solar systems energy production with solar energy from its system resources and its renewable energy certificates from its renewable generating facility. Baker Renewable Energy, based in Raleigh, North Carolina, will act as the engineering procurement contractor (EPC) for the solar project.

Financial details and a construction timeline were not disclosed.
