Egypt, Syria, Saudi Arabia to Strengthen Energy Cooperation

Feb 11, 2008 - Xinhua

Egypt, Syria and Saudi Arabia were planning to promote cooperation in the electricity and energy domains, the Egyptian MENA news agency reported on Saturday.

On the sidelines of the 23rd session of the Arab electricity ministers council's executive bureau, the electricity ministers of the three countries probed ways to strengthen cooperation in this respect as a technical and economic feasibility study on the electricity grid between Egypt and Saudi Arabia has been completed, according to Egyptian Minister of Electricity and Energy Hassan Younes.

With the completion of the Egyptian-Saudi Arabia power grid, Egypt would have reached integrated power grids with the majority of Arab states including Syria, Jordan and Libya which are expected to be linked up with Lebanon, Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco, Younes said.

After that, Saudi Arabia will be linked up with the Gulf and Yemen, he added.

On Thursday, the Arab electricity ministers probed the topic of Arab power linkage as a booster to integration among Arab countries.
