OFFICE OF THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Mr. Peter Meisen

Dear Mr. Meisen,

Thank you for your November 8th letter informing me about the Global Energy Network Institute (GENI) Initiative.

UNICEF as an organization of the United Nations, mandated to work with and on children's issues is concerned by the spiraling cost of energy and its social, economic and environmental impact on families and children, especially in the developing world.

The need to conserve and protect our environment through a long term strategy accompanied by a series of concrete actions would be a major shift towards a harmonized approach to sustainable development.

The strategy to promote a global web of electricity is indeed commendable and in our opinion highly desirable. The outcome of your efforts to establish such a network will be of immense help to the work of UNICEF specifically in providing the opportunity and resources to the most marginalized and deprived communities of the world.

I wish to commend you for the initiative and assure you of our support on issues related to children. I am pleased to inform you that I have shared your letter with Ms. Vanessa Tobin, Chief, Water, Environment and Sanitation. You may wish to contact her directly to further discuss this initiative. Ms. Tobin can be reached at vtobin@unicef.org.

Thank you for your interest in UNICEF.

Yours sincerely,

Carol Bellamy
