The International Energy
Agency (IEA) is the energy arm of the OECD, representing the 34 largest global
economies. Two recent reports offer a sobering account on climate change and
its consequences:
“Worst ever carbon
emissions leave climate on the brink: record rise means 2oC target
almost out of reach.”
“World headed for
irreversible climate change in 5 years: if fossil fuel infrastructure is not
rapidly changed, the world will ‘lose forever’ the chance to avoid dangerous
climate change.”
Fatih Birol, the IEA chief
economist said, “I am very worried. This is the worst news on emissions... the prospect is getting bleaker.” Professor Lord Stern of the London
School of Economics stated “such warming would disrupt the lives and
livelihoods of hundreds of millions of people across the planet, leading to
widespread mass migration and conflict. That is a risk any sane person would
seek to drastically reduce.”

The UN climate
chief, Christina Figueres declared “what we are looking at is nothing other
than the biggest industrial and energy revolution that has ever been seen.”
