Every year the Earth Institute
of Columbia University hosts a State of the Planet conference to assess our
global condition and future prospects. Hosted by noted economist Jeffery
Sachs, the recent event offered a sobering reality – ‘the state of our
planet is grim.’ All three aspects of sustainability -- economic
development, social justice and environmental management -- have barely
improved, or have worsened, in the recent decades.
On the most vexing issue of climate change, the
experts highlighted the challenge. Dr. James Hansen noted that timescales are “longer
than human memory and longer than terms of political office.” And Dr. Lisa
Goddard stated,“human experience is largely local, and it’s hard to notice a
global trend.”
In cooperation with the
United Nations, the Earth Institute will act as Secretariat for the new United Nations
Sustainable Development Network – to become a hub for all universities and NGOs
working on these issues.
We offer the World GameTM mission as a foundation for this effort:
“How
do we make the world work for 100% of humanity in the shortest possible time through
spontaneous cooperation without ecological damage or disadvantage to anyone?”
Business-as-usual isn’t working. The premier solution, "Plan A" for our Planet, is the rapid development of renewable energy
resources in every nation, on every continent and interconnecting them using
high-voltage transmission to cities and industry. That’s a Plan for
Sustainability.
