India is the world's largest democracy and second largest population at 1.2 billion people (17% of the global total). It is predicted that India's population will surpass China in the coming decade, and these two nations will represent 40% of our world's population. What happens in India will affect us all.
There is positive news. The Bharatiya Janata Party, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi (left), is pushing the GENI agenda — advocating for high-voltage transmission interconnections between states, tapping their abundant wind and solar potential.
By 2022, Prime Minister Modi is targeting 100,000MW of new solar power capacity and 60,000MW of newly installed wind power. This is a five-fold increase in their renewable generation capacity!
To meet this pledge will require technology transfer, domestic and international investment and political will on their part. It is a big deal.
We rarely look beyond our national borders. But we now live on a planet where actions in far-off nations impact everyone. If India, with all its challenges can make this transition, then it is incumbent upon every nation to take a stand. We need your help to link, share and promote this solution in your country.
