We are featuring
the Global Energy Interconnection project again – as it is in complete
alignment with the GENI initiative to link renewable energy resources around
the world. Liu Zhenya is the former Chairman of the State Grid Corp. of
China and he has been pushing the economic, environmental and social benefits of
this strategy. This graphic highlights where abundant hydro, solar and wind
resources are found on every continent.
Regional clusters are similar to Regional
Transmission Organizations (RTO) that enable utilities to buy and sell electricity
across borders, between utilities and nations.
These regional clusters can then be
interconnected using high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission lines to
move bulk electric power between continents. HVDC transmission losses are
nominal, approximately .5% every 100 miles, especially when tapping a rich
source of cheap renewable energy.
Now Antonio
Guterres, the United Nations Secretary General, has added his full support. He states this strategy is fundamental to achieving the “sustainable energy
for all” target within the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. Everyone
wins – and the quicker we build it the better for all.
