In 2015, the nations of the world developed
the 2030 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We featured
these 17 Goals and 169 targets in previous newsletters. Many of these goals
require us to shift our economies to cleaner, more sustainable practices. Several
climate analysis organizations then defined 6 milestones – in Energy,
Infrastructure, Transport, Land Use, Industry and Finance -- that must be
met by 2020 to put the world on the pathway to meet the Paris Climate
Agreement.
The World Resources Institute tracks our
progress on these milestones, and our collective grading is poor. Strong
investment in renewable energy has achieved 30% of electricity supply. Yet
almost every other indicator is lacking/lagging, rated as “insufficient progress” to be
on track by the 2020 Turning Point.
We must push our
leaders now to commit, legislate and invest in these critical sectors.
