Dear Mr. Meisen:

Thank you for your letter regarding the Global Grid Initiative. As you point out, there are a number of potential benefits that can be realized through the interconnection of power grids. For example, those in remote regions with few resources of their own can benefit from links to regions with more abundant power. Similarly, uneconomic projects can become feasible if the power generated can be sold to areas of higher demand.

Incorporating renewable sources of energy into energy planning is an important tenet of our international energy policy. There are many ways to accomplish this; grid interconnections are just one example of how these resources can be utilized more fully. In looking for ways to meet the world's energy needs, we will continue to advocate the adoption of energy policies which are economically sound and environmentally friendly.

I appreciate your sharing your ideas with me. I believe we share similar goals and interests. You can be assured that your thoughts on energy cooperation will receive appropriate attention as we continue to develop our international energy and environment policies.

With best wishes,

Sincerely yours,

Timothy E. Wirth
