Hydroenergy Potential in Germany

Unexploited technical potential of hydro-power

The map shows the untapped potential of hydroelectric power that would be technically possible. Each value concerns one federal state and refers to its entire area. A substantial further potential exists, particularly in Baden-Württemberg, and also, to a smaller extent, in the other federal states of southern and central Germany. Hydroelectric power naturally plays only a minor role in the flat regions adjoining the North Sea and the Baltic.

The values are based on figures which are published on the Internet by "Internationales Wirtschaftsforum Regenerative Energien" (IWR). For the map the difference was determined between the potential technically possible and the potential currently exploited. The values represent this difference divided by the area of the federal state. The unit of measurement is explained in the glossary (MWh/km²a).
