Military joins state is clean energy initiative

The U.S. military is teaming with the state to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and to assist in the development of alternative, renewable sources of energy.

The Hawaii-based U.S. Pacific Command says it's committed to helping the state attain the goal of meeting 40 percent of the state's energy needs through renewable sources by 2030.

Maj. Gen. Stephen Tom is the command's chief of staff. He says the military recognizes the success of the Hawaii Clean Energy Initiative depends largely of the cooperation of U.S. military forces stationed in the islands.

Officials say two goals of the command "going green" are to reduce the taxpayers' burden while reducing Department of Defense reliance on fossil fuels and to reduce greenhouse emissions.
