Los Angeles Approves US $3 Million FiT Programme

April 4, 2012 - Nilima Choudhury - pv-tech.org

Los Angeles city council has approved a feed-in tariff programme to generate 10MW supplying 10,000 households a year. The city’s Department of Water and Power will raise US$3 million each year through the scheme to help the utility develop a pricing plan for residents. This pilot programme will take effect in the coming months.

The feed-in tariff is separate from its solar incentive programme, which could make it more expensive than generating electricity with fossil fuels, stated DWP general manager Ron Nichols. “We will continue to pursue the most cost-effective sources we can”, he added.

Michael Ester, assistant DWP general manager said the city is facing a state legislative deadline to generate 20% of its power from renewable sources by 2013 and 30% by 2030.

The DWP is planning a series of community workshops to explain how the program will work and how people can apply for it. Information on the workshops will be available at ladwp.com.
