Iran Needs Two Years to Link Russia Power Grid

Mar 12, 2007 - BBC Monitoring Middle East

Iran's Deputy Energy Minister Mohammad Ahmadian said here on Monday [12 March] that the country needed two years to link Russia's electricity network.

It is a real possibility to connect Iran's power grid with Russia's and later with Europe's via the republics of Armenia and Azerbaijan, said the official, adding, The measure helps establish parallel electricity connection with the countries.

The Managing Director of Iran Power Network Management Co. Mas'ud Hojjat had earlier told ISNA news agency that there existed low- scale exchange of electricity between Iran and Russia.

He expressed hope that 400-kV high voltage power transmission lines would be built in the region in the next Iranian calendar year (to start March 21, 2007) and would pave the way for reinforcing relations with Russia and signing a contract on direct exchange of electricity.
