Palestinian Authority reaches agreement with Egypt
on Gaza electricity
Aug 30, 2007 - BBC Monitoring
The Gaza power authority has announced
that an agreement was reached with Egypt to supply
Gaza districts with 150 MW of power for a period
of five years that could reach 800 MW in future.
Kan'an Ubayd, chairman of the authority,
said that the project was already under way, hoping
that it would be complete in 15 months from now. The
project would mean Gaza would do away with Israeli
power supply, he said, noting that the Israelis had
agreed to supply Gaza with 50 Megawatt to meet the
existing power shortage. The chairman said that the
Israeli threat to cut power supply to the Gaza Strip
would entail an "unprecedented human catastrophe".
