Russian Power Grid Working on Idea of Siberia-Europe Transmission Line

Jun 27, 2007 - BBC Monitoring Former Soviet Union

RAO UES [Unified Energy System of Russia] is working on a project of building a power transmission line from Siberia to Europe, the UES chairman of the board Anatoliy Chubays said at a meeting of the International Commission on Large Dams today.

The project could allow transmission of electricity power from Siberia, which has reserves in power generation, to the central Russia and Europe where there is a lack of electricity. Chubays recalled that a radical enhancement of the power grid was envisaged in the master plan of siting Russia's electricity sector facilities until 2020. A direct current transmission line from Siberia to Europe will be built along an alternate current transmission line, Chubays said.

"We are working on this decision seriously. The level of its technical sophistication is colossal. We should make an effort to move from the current pre-design stage to the project stage," he noted.
