PARIS (Thomson Financial) - French grid operator RTE and its British counterpart, National Grid, said they will spend 70 million euros upgrading the high-voltage power line between France and the UK.

As part of the maintenance, the grid operators said they have awarded a contract to Areva (other-otc: ARVCF.PK - news - people ) to replace the valves that convert the different currents used in the two countries.

During the maintenance work, scheduled for April-May 2010 and April-May 2011, the power line will run on 50 percent capacity for a total of seven weeks, the companies said.

RTE is a division of French state-owned electricity group EDF. tfn.paris@thomsonreuters.com gt/wj
