    Mr. Alan Griffith
    Australia Minister of Resources & Energy

I have followed closely the work of Global Energy Network Institute (GENI) for some time, and find the project to be one of the most important opportunities to further the cause of environmental protection and sustainable development. Energy is the centerpiece of industrial civilization, primary to the debate leading to UNCED, and a key element in the discussion on climate negotiations.

The findings of the GENI International Workshop in Canada last year were impressive, and I encouraged Peter Meisen, GENI'S Executive Director, to deepen those conclusions with an International conference in Australia. I am pleased to see this commitment is now planned for Sydney* in November 1992. By following on the heels of UNCED, the world should pay close attention to the event you are hosting.

UNEP fully supports the objectives of your International Conference, and while funding is not available, we would be prepared to work with you as a co-sponsor of the conference, offering UN expertise, delegate contacts, and my personal participation.

The GENI project ultimately will require the cooperation of all nations if it is to be implemented. The precessional benefits of your event could go far beyond even your own expectations. I wish you well in your preparations, and look forward to working with you.

* rescheduled for Geneva

Yours in the service of the Earth,

NOEL J. BROWN

Director
